What are removable denture ?
These are used to replace missing teeth and are made of plastic. Sometimes metal is also used in order to make them strong and less bulky. When there are only a few missing teeth that need to be replaced “Partial” dentures will be fitted. When all of the natural teeth are missing, a ‘full’ set of dentures will be used.
What will this treatment involve ?
-Your dentist will take an impression of your mouth, which is a mould from a putty – like material. This is used by the dental technician to make a plaster model for the denture to be built on.
-The dental technician will then make wax blocks which fit the plaster models. Your dentist will trim them, so that the technician will know what shape to make the denture and how your teeth bite together.
– A trial denture is made, so that you and your dentist can test how it fits and looks before any final changes are made. When you are both satisfied with the trial denture, it will be passed back to the technician who will permanently fix the teeth ready for use.
– Your dentist may ask for you to make another appointment, to check whether you have any problems with the denture. If you are having problems with the denture the dentist can make small adjustments, which may be referred to as ‘easing’ your dentures.
What are the benefits of removable dentures?
- Removable dentures are beneficial if you have lost some teeth, as they can improve your appearance and enable you to bite, chew and speak more efficiently
- They can look very natural, as they are custom-made to fit your mouth
- If you have just had some teeth taken out, your dentist can fit teeth directly afterwards, so that no-one will know. These are called ‘immediate’ dentures
However, it is important to note that dentures will never feel like your own teeth and it may take time to get used to them. If you are wearing dentures for the first time, your dentist will explain how you should look after your new dentures and the remaining natural teeth
