Porcelain Veneers

PORCELAIN VENEERS

§         How long does a porcelain veneer take to put in place?

Two appointments are needed for porcelain veneers.

The first will be about 30 minutes long during which your tooth (teeth) will be trimming by the dentist and then an impression will be made to manufacture the porcelain veneer.

The Second visit will take about 30 minutes for the dentist to bond the porcelain veneer to the patient’s tooth (teeth)

§         Will I experience any discomfort after the first appointment?

Some patients may experience sensitivity to hot/cold drinks, but using a straw can usually avoid this.

Between the two visits to the dentist the patient should brush regularly and avoid such staining agents as coffee, tea, or tobacco. Patients should also floss frequently, as the gums during this period are prone with swelling and bleeding.

1)     Tooth is numbed by local anesthetic and prepared tooth.

2)     The dentist makes an impression of the prepared tooth.

3)     A temporary crown is put in place to prevent the tooth from shifting while the crown is manufactured.

Second visit

Final crown is tested in position for bite and adjusted by the dentist. If the fit is clean, then the crown will be cemented in place with a permanent resin.

§         Is there much pain involved?

The dentist will locally anesthetized the patient to avoid any discomfort.

§         How long does a crown last?

A crown can last for a very long time, 10 to 15 or more years. It also depends on how well you take care of it and what kind of crown it is...ie porcelain crown or gold crown. Gold crown generally lasts longer. Porcelain sometimes can be chipped off due to grinding teeth or biting something hard and it's old and brittle and sometimes will be chipped off on one corner. Yes, you can get decay under the crown margin or under the gum line if you do not have good home care. You have to floss and keep plaque away from the gum line so the crown stays clean. Xrays will detect decay under crowns or on crown margin. Hope this helps you.
